He brings on 25+ years of experience spanning from promoting biodiversity conservation/ research, sound ecological stewardship fostering sustainable growth, Insurance, community-based empowerment, and technology innovation spheres.
His leadership reflects a consistent commitment to measurable impact, whether in corporate boardrooms, biodiversity hotspots, or academic settings.
As an AI practitioner, Richard views artificial intelligence as a practical tool for human transformation, not as a replacement for human intelligence, but an indispensable means to leverage technology to upscale opportunities; enhanced production outputs, Job creation, or extension. He focuses on machine learning applications for predictive analytics of historical data, to uncover patterns with greater accuracy, and forecast future outcomes or events.
As an Insurer, Richard foresees VAAI to led in a grounding breaking model to transform biodiversity from being a liability, to an insured, valuable asset positioned to benefit from Green Carbon Credit Program(s). Also, presenting a value proposition of an insurable agriculture/ biodiversity-based product that doesn’t just compensate yield loss; but financially incentivizes farmers and community seed banks, to actively maintain diverse crops. Premiums could be calculated based on the genetic diversity index of the farmer’s land, rewarding biodiversity conservationists with lower costs and higher payouts.
His expertise in biodiversity management is guided by the principles of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). Popularizing regenerative agriculture, the cultivation of high-value, native crops; fruits and vegetables, flowers, and the use of genetic sequencing data to resilient seed systems.
Richard, will implore VAAI to collaborate with agriculture-based research and biodiversity conservation institutions to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) Agriculture based Systems, promoting farming communities to enhance In-situ and Ex-situ conservation and national Gene banks activities.
Richard intends to utilize VAAI’s platform to encourage use of climate-smart solutions, that embrace predictive modeling, Green Carbon Credit programs and global seed exchange systems, that connect farmers with stress-tolerant varieties, positioning the Centre as an intelligent biodiversity broker.
The career journey spans from having worked with the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO). Earlier, contributed to the implementation of conservation projects with UNEP/GEF/FAO and policy communication under CGIAR. In the Insurance Industry; with AIG Uganda Limited (2001/ 2012 – 2018), Sanlam, and Liberty insurance companies in both General and Life Insurance.
